The New York Times' analysis of the latest cost-saving measure by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer to help lower the cost of its blockbuster drug was a surprise. The drug maker paid $1.3 billion, or about 20 percent more than the $2 billion Pfizer paid to the European drugmaker for the drug, a charge Pfizer's head of research, David Graham, said on Tuesday. Pfizer's cost-cutting plan has been criticized as a way to lower costs for the pharmaceutical company's top executives, but the company still says it's working to make more money by cutting spending on the drug, and at least $1 billion is expected this year, according to Graham, a Pfizer senior vice president.
Pfizer said it's cutting costs on the drug in the first quarter of this year after a review by the independent panel of advisers who voted in favor of the plan. The panel recommended that the company reduce spending by about 30 percent, the same amount Pfizer said it would charge to the company if the drug was a blockbuster.
The company said the new cost-cutting measures are part of a wider trend in the pharmaceutical industry, where pharmaceutical companies have to raise costs on a few key drugs, to meet the increasing demand for cheaper, less expensive treatments.
The first-quarter financial report showed Pfizer's adjusted drug costs rose 14 percent in the first quarter, to $632 million, or $2.2 billion, compared with $636 million, or $2.9 billion, the year before.
